If there is one indulgence I have a hard time refusing, it’s a hot latte on a chilly morning. They add up FAST, especially when you’re a fan of the alternative milks like I am. Good news is that making your favorites at home is actually pretty simple. I love my classic maple latte, and this new oat milk honey latte is a real contender for my favorite this fall.

It’s very simple to make, requiring only 3 ingredients and about 5 minutes of your time. I’ve shared the tools I like to use, but also lots of tips for how to make a latte with just basic kitchen supplies and regular coffee. It’s quicker and cheaper than your morning coffee shop stop, and it’s delicious!

Recipe Highlights

  • It requires only 3 ingredients and 5 minutes to make.
  • Has the flavor of a fancy coffee, but at a fraction of the cost.
  • Easy to customize with spices and sweetness.

Ingredients & Substitutions

One thing I LOVE about making my lattes at home is controlling the level of sweetness. Add more honey for a sweeter latte, more cinnamon for a spicier, warm drink, or reduce both for a more classic latte flavor.

Ingredients needed for an oatmilk honey latte including ground coffee, oatmilk, honey, cinnamon sticks.
  • Oat milk – I prefer an ‘extra creamy’ or ‘barista’ option if I can find it. Chobani is my #1 favorite!
    • This can technically be made with any type of milk – dairy or nondairy! Different milks will affect flavor.
  • Honey – Pure local honey is best, but you can use alternative liquid sweeteners. Agave, corn syrup, simple syrup, or maple syrup are good options.
  • Coffee – If you have an espresso maker, you’ll need one shot (1 ounce) per serving. If not, make a double strong pot of coffee and use just 3 ounces per serving.
  • Cinnamon stick, optional – I like to put a cinnamon stick in the oat milk while I heat it. It infuses the coffee with a subtle cinnamon flavor.
    • Alternative spices like nutmeg or clove are also great. You can use whole spices in the milk, or just a measly 1/8 teaspoon ground spices per 2 servings (a pinch for a single cup) works too.

Step by Step Instructions

Making a latte at home is easier than you think. Here are some of the tool combos you can use to make it.

  • Espresso machine with milk frother attachment and heat safe cup for milk.
  • Stovetop moka pot, handheld milk frother, and microwave-safe liquid measuring cup. (My Fave Method!)
  • A mason jar with lid, and a coffee maker!

Step 1 – Make Espresso and Heat Milk

Make enough espresso for the amount of servings you want. For a single serving,, you’ll need one shot of espresso. For a travel cup or a large strong coffee, I make a double serving for just myself.

If using regular coffee, brew a double-strength small pot. You’ll want to use 3-4 ounces of coffee.

Combine the milk, honey, and any spices in a heat-safe cup or mason jar and microwave until steaming hot. Time varies based on microwave strength.

Step 2 – Get it Frothy and Foamy

Use your espresso machine milk attachment or the handheld milk frother to foam the milk. For a mason jar, place the lid on hand tight and shake like crazy. The harder you shake, the more foam you get.

Pro Tip – Higher fat milks foam better! Extra creamy oat milk is my go to for lattes, but whole milk or half and half are the best for foamy alternatives. Almond milk and other low fat options will likely have less foam, or any foam will subside quickly.

Step 3 – Combine and enjoy

Pour your espresso or double-strength coffee into a coffee cup. Use a spoon to hold back the foam, and gently pour the hot honey milk into the espresso. Spoon the foam on top and enjoy.

FAQs

Is Oat milk good for lattes?

The creaminess of oat milk, especially with the barista or extra creamy varieties, makes an excellent alternative to dairy milk in lattes.

Can Oat milk be frothed?

Yes, non-dairy milk can be frothed, but higher fat content is helpful. Use a barista blend or extra creamy option to help make better, longer-lasting foam.

What kind of milk makes the best foam for lattes?

High-fat milk, such as whole milk and half and half, is the best for long-lasting, creamy foam. However, non-dairy alternatives like oat milk and soy milk are great choices, too.

Can I make a honey latte vegan?

Yes! Swap the honey out for maple syrup, corn syrup, or agave nectar to make an oat milk latte vegan.

Notes

This is a VERY flexible recipe! Here are potential equipment options:
-A home espresso machine with milk frother.
-A stovetop moka pot with handheld milk frother.
-A mason jar and coffee brewed double-strength. Please use 3-4 ounces of coffee if not using espresso.
Make it sweeter – Increase the honey by double.
Make it stronger – Use 2 ounces (a double shot) of espresso per serving.
Make it for more people – double, triple, or quadruple the recipe as needed.
Make it spicier! – Add nutmeg or allspice to the milk, just a pinch goes a long way!
Make it vegan – Swap maple syrup, agave nectar, simple syrup, or corn syrup for the honey.
For travel cup portions, I recommend making 2 servings.
